Member Spotlight – JAMinc

Why was your organization founded?
JAMinc was organized in 2001 as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) VA corporation as an outgrowth of Fieldcrest Music, a concert promotion company focused on bluegrass music. We saw a need to do more than stage concerts and moved toward an educational mission, raising awareness of a wider range of acoustic music to include jazz, folk, blues and other roots-based genres.
Why is your organization unique? How do you affect the quality of life in Virginia?
Our mission statement, "To open minds, hearts and ears to music deserving a wider audience through education, performance and support," reflects our goals of providing performance and mentoring opportunities to local artists and working with public and private schools, giving students the chance to hear artists not a part of their regular curriculum, often in workshop settings. We also stage regular house-style concerts at In Your Ear Studios bringing non-mainstream acoustic acts to an intimate listening environment, archiving the live recordings.
What recent accomplishment are you most proud of?
We have established a roster of local artists representing a variety of acoustic music styles available for assembly performances and workshops, as a resource to music educators in our public and private schools. We are in the process of compiling a CD of these artists to distribute to all music departments and have funds available to supplement school budgets for these appearances.
