Member Spotlight – EQUI-KIDS Therapeutic Riding Program

children on horses in the EQUI-KIDS program

Why was your organization founded?

In 1989 I started EQUI-KIDS with one pony and six riders to offer therapeutic horseback riding activities to special needs children. Our waiting list has over 350 individuals who are anxious to get into the full-time program, which is why we are expanding.

Why is your organization unique? How do you affect the quality of life in Virginia?

EQUI-KIDS serves the special needs population not only in Virginia Beach, but all surrounding Tidewater areas as well as Northeastern North Carolina. Today we serve hundreds of special needs students (both children and adults) each year, offer a school program to local schools, are beginning a mental health program for girls with eating disorders, hold a summer camp for waiting list persons and a four-week lesson program also for those on the waiting list each July.

What recent accomplishment are you most proud of?

Becoming the 2005 James Brady Professional Achievement Award winner by the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association and the 2005 Special Friend of Agriculture Award from the City of Virginia Beach.
