VANNO Tracks the General Assembly

VANNO is once again monitoring legislation introduced to Virginia’s 2010 General Assembly because, collectively, they stand to impact a broad swath of Virginia’s nonprofit sector—comprising nearly 40,000 organizations operating in the fields of health, human services, education, economic development, arts, culture, environment, housing, and public safety. Nonprofits, Elections, and the Supreme Court's Recent Decision

The January 21, 2010 U.S. Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission does NOT change how other laws limit the election-related activities of charitable nonprofit organizations with tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Read more.


Nonprofits Included in White House Jobs Plan

The White House included nonprofits when it began outlining the details of a $33 billion job-creation proposal designed to spur hiring by small employers. This development marks important recognition by federal policymakers that nonprofits play a vital role not only as service providers, but also as employers important to the economic stability of local communities.  Read more.

New Report: Impact of Nonprofit Sector

To help make their policy arguments, nonprofit leaders should become familiar with a fresh report issued by the Congressional Research Service, entitled "An Overview of the Nonprofit and Charitable Sector" (R40919; November 17, 2009). This new report contains a variety of gems that nonprofits can use to help state and local policy makers, journalists, grantmakers, and the general public have a better understanding of the nonprofit sector.
